Mission Statement
“To celebrate, connect, and champion the Filipino-Australian community through honest, beautiful, and purposeful storytelling.”
This document sets out the editorial charter, community pledge, and guiding principles that have governed Australian Filipina Magazine since its founding — and that continue to guide every story we publish today.
Purpose
Australian Filipina exists to serve the Filipino-Australian community. Our purpose is to inform, celebrate, connect, and advocate — to be the online platform that the community can rely on to reflect its life with accuracy, depth, and pride.
We are not a general-interest publication that occasionally covers Filipino-Australian affairs. We are a community platform, first and always. Every editorial decision we make is filtered through a single question: does this serve our readers?
Editorial Independence
Australian Filipina is independently owned and operated. No government body, political party, corporate sponsor, or advertiser has any influence over our editorial decisions.
Advertising revenue supports the operational costs of this platform. Advertisers are valued partners, but they do not commission, approve, or veto editorial content. The separation between our commercial and editorial functions is absolute and non-negotiable.
We will not publish sponsored content without clearly labelling it as such. We will not allow commercial relationships to compromise the integrity of our journalism.
Accuracy and Fairness
We are committed to publishing accurate, verified information. Before any claim is published, it must be supported by credible sources. Where facts are disputed, we present multiple perspectives and make clear the nature of the dispute.
We correct errors promptly and transparently. When we get something wrong, we say so — clearly, without burying the correction. Our readers deserve to know when we have made a mistake, and they deserve to see it fixed.
We do not publish rumour, speculation, or unverified claims as fact. We distinguish clearly between news reporting, opinion, and analysis.
Representation and Voice
We believe that Filipino-Australian stories should be told by Filipino-Australian voices. We actively seek out, develop, and platform writers, photographers, and creatives from within the community.
We are committed to representing the full diversity of the Filipino-Australian experience — across generations, genders, regions of origin, professions, and perspectives. We do not present a single, monolithic view of what it means to be Filipino in Australia.
We give particular attention to voices that are underrepresented in mainstream Australian media: women, young people, recent arrivals, regional communities, and those whose stories are rarely told.
Cultural Responsibility
We approach Filipino culture with respect, knowledge, and pride. We do not exoticise, stereotype, or reduce the richness of Filipino heritage to convenient clichés.
We are mindful of the power of representation. The stories we tell, and the way we tell them, shape how the Filipino-Australian community sees itself — and how it is seen by others. We take that responsibility seriously.
We celebrate Filipino achievement without uncritical boosterism. We report on community challenges without sensationalism or shame. We hold both pride and honesty in equal measure.
Privacy and Dignity
We treat all individuals — whether public figures or private citizens — with dignity and respect. We do not publish information that unnecessarily intrudes on personal privacy, causes unwarranted harm, or serves no legitimate public interest.
We are particularly careful in our coverage of vulnerable individuals, including children, victims of crime or trauma, and those experiencing hardship. In these cases, we apply the highest standards of sensitivity and restraint.
We give individuals the opportunity to respond to criticism or allegations before publication wherever possible.
Conflicts of Interest
We disclose any conflicts of interest that may affect our coverage. Where a writer has a personal, financial, or professional relationship with a subject they are covering, this must be declared to the editor and, where relevant, disclosed to readers.
Members of the editorial team do not accept gifts, payments, or benefits from sources, subjects, or advertisers that could compromise — or appear to compromise — their editorial independence.
Community Accountability
We are accountable to our readers. We welcome feedback, corrections, and criticism. We publish a contact address for editorial enquiries and respond to reader correspondence in good faith.
We conduct periodic reviews of our editorial standards and practices. This charter is a living document — it is reviewed and updated as the needs of the community and the standards of journalism evolve.
We are not above criticism. We hold ourselves to the same standards of transparency and accountability that we expect of the institutions and individuals we cover.
The Values That Define Who We Are
These are not aspirational statements. They are the values we live by — tested over two decades of publishing and reaffirmed with every story we tell.
Community First
Every story we publish is chosen because it matters to the Filipino-Australian community. We are accountable to our readers, not to advertisers or political agendas.
Cultural Pride
We celebrate Filipino heritage without apology. From Filipiniana to food, from bayanihan to business — we honour the richness of our culture in every story we publish.
Authentic Voices
We platform Filipino-Australian writers, photographers, and creatives. Our stories are told by the community, for the community — not filtered through an outside lens.
Two Nations, One Story
We sit at the intersection of two great nations. We cover Australia and the Philippines with equal depth, because our readers live across both worlds.
Fairness & Balance
We present multiple perspectives on contested issues. We do not take political sides. Our loyalty is to the truth and to the community — not to any faction within it.
Long-term Thinking
We are building something that will outlast any single story. Every decision we make is made with the long-term health of this platform and the community in mind.
Our Promise to the Filipino-Australian Community
Beyond the formal charter, these are the personal commitments we make to every reader, contributor, and community member who places their trust in Australian Filipina Magazine.
We will always put the community's interests before commercial interests.
We will be transparent about who we are, how we work, and who funds us.
We will actively seek out and amplify voices from within the community.
We will correct our mistakes quickly, clearly, and without defensiveness.
We will treat every person we write about with dignity and fairness.
We will protect the privacy of individuals who trust us with their stories.
We will invest in developing the next generation of Filipino-Australian journalists.
We will honour both Australia and the Philippines in everything we publish.
This pledge is made on behalf of the entire Australian Filipina team — editorial, commercial, and operational — to the community we are privileged to serve.
