Biography

A Voice Born from Community

Violi Calvert arrived in Australia with a journalist's instinct and a community leader's heart. Having grown up in the Philippines with a deep appreciation for storytelling and cultural identity, she quickly recognised that the Filipino-Australian community — vibrant, ambitious, and deeply connected to two nations — had no publication that truly spoke to its experience.

In the early 2000s, she founded Australian Filipina from her home in Sydney. What began as a modest online publication, assembled with passion and a small circle of contributors, grew steadily into the most trusted editorial voice for Filipinos across Australia.

Building the Platform

Under Violi's leadership, Australian Filipina expanded from a local newsletter into a full editorial platform covering lifestyle, business, culture, sports, community affairs, and the arts. She personally mentored dozens of Filipino-Australian writers, photographers, and creatives — many of whom went on to careers in mainstream Australian media.

Her editorial philosophy has always been simple: tell the truth, honour the community, and never underestimate your readers. She has resisted the temptation to sensationalise or simplify, insisting instead on nuanced, respectful coverage that reflects the full complexity of the Filipino-Australian experience.

Advocacy and Recognition

Beyond the magazine, Violi has been a tireless advocate for Filipino-Australian representation in public life. She has spoken at community forums, cultural events, and media conferences across the country, consistently arguing that diverse communities deserve diverse media — not as a token gesture, but as a fundamental democratic right.

Her coverage of the Filipinas national women's football team — including the historic 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup — brought Australian Filipina its largest-ever readership and demonstrated the power of community journalism to capture moments of genuine national significance.

Looking Forward

Today, Violi continues to lead Australian Filipina into its digital future. She oversees editorial direction, mentors the next generation of Filipino-Australian journalists, and remains personally involved in the stories that matter most to the community.

She believes the magazine's best years are still ahead — not because the technology has changed, but because the community it serves continues to grow, to achieve, and to demand the quality of storytelling it deserves.

Editorial Philosophy

The Principles That Guide Every Story We Tell

After two decades of publishing, these are the convictions that have never changed — the editorial north star that guides every decision we make, from the stories we choose to the words we use to tell them.

01

Community Before Clicks

We do not chase viral moments or sensational headlines. Every story is chosen because it genuinely matters to the Filipino-Australian community — not because it will generate traffic.

02

Accuracy Above All

We verify before we publish. In an era of misinformation, our readers trust us to get it right. That trust is the most valuable thing we have, and we protect it fiercely.

03

Authentic Representation

Filipino-Australian stories should be told by Filipino-Australian voices. We actively seek out and develop writers from within the community, not outside observers looking in.

04

Editorial Independence

Our editorial decisions are made free from commercial or political pressure. Advertisers support the magazine financially; they do not influence what we cover or how we cover it.

05

Depth Over Volume

We would rather publish one well-crafted, thoroughly reported story than ten shallow ones. Quality is not negotiable — it is the standard we hold ourselves to every single day.

06

Celebrating Achievement

The Filipino-Australian community is full of extraordinary people doing extraordinary things. Our job is to find them, tell their stories, and make sure the community knows they exist.
