Applies ToAll Contributors

These guidelines set out the editorial standards and expectations for all contributors to Australian Filipina Magazine. Please read them carefully before submitting your pitch. They reflect our commitment to quality journalism and help us respond to you as quickly as possible.

I. Community Relevance

Every piece we publish must speak meaningfully to the Filipino-Australian experience. Your story does not need to be exclusively about the Philippines or Australia — but it should resonate with readers who live between two cultures.

  • We welcome stories about identity, migration, family, career, culture, food, travel, and community life.
  • We are interested in both personal narratives and reported features.
  • Stories that connect the Filipino-Australian community to broader Australian society are especially valued.

II. Original Work Only

We only accept original, previously unpublished work. Submissions must not be under consideration elsewhere at the time of pitching.

  • If your piece has appeared on a personal blog or social media, please disclose this in your pitch.
  • We do not accept content that has been published in print or online by another publication.
  • Simultaneous submissions to other publications are not permitted.
  • All content must be your own original work and must not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party.

III. Word Count & Format

Please adhere to the following word count ranges for each content type:

  • Feature articles: 800–1,500 words
  • Opinion pieces: 500–900 words
  • Community profiles: 600–1,000 words
  • Travel and food writing: 600–1,200 words
  • Submit as a Google Doc or Word document with your name and working title in the file name.

IV. Accuracy & Sources

All factual claims must be verifiable. We reserve the right to fact-check all submissions and may request supporting documentation before publication.

  • Include links or references for statistics, quotes, and named sources.
  • Attribute all direct quotes to named individuals or verified sources.
  • If you are writing about a living person, you must have their consent or a verifiable public record.
  • We do not publish anonymous sources except in exceptional circumstances approved by the editor.

V. Tone & Voice

Australian Filipina has a warm, intelligent, and community-focused voice. We welcome personal essays, reported features, opinion, reviews, and profiles.

  • We do not publish content that is promotional, defamatory, or politically partisan.
  • Opinion pieces must be clearly labelled as such and must be grounded in reasoned argument.
  • Personal essays should be honest and reflective without being self-indulgent.
  • We value clarity, precision, and respect for our diverse readership.

VI. Images & Photography

If you have high-resolution images to accompany your piece, please mention this in your pitch. All images must be your own or properly licensed.

  • Images should be at least 1200px wide and in JPEG or PNG format.
  • Portrait images should be at least 800px wide.
  • We can source images for accepted pieces if needed — mention this in your pitch.
  • Do not submit images you do not have the right to use.

VII. Editorial Process

Accepted pitches will be assigned to an editor who will work with you through the drafting and editing process. We may request revisions.

  • Final editorial decisions — including headline, subheadings, and publication date — rest with the editorial team.
  • We aim to respond to every pitch within two to three weeks.
  • If your pitch is accepted, you will receive an editorial brief and a deadline.
  • We reserve the right to edit, decline, or remove submitted content at our discretion.

VIII. Payment & Credit

Australian Filipina is a community publication. At this time we are unable to offer payment for contributions.

  • All published writers receive a full byline, author bio, and a link to their portfolio or social media.
  • Contributors retain copyright of their work and grant Australian Filipina Magazine a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to publish, edit, and distribute the content.
  • We are deeply grateful for every contribution and treat our writers with respect and transparency.

Not sure if your idea fits? Pitch it anyway. We'd rather hear a rough idea and help you shape it than miss a great story. Our editors are friendly and will always give you honest, constructive feedback.
